Flames of War - 2010

TOP SECRET – YOUR EYES ONLY

Operation: Battlecry

Authorising Officer: Mj Gen Van Rossum

Operational Outline:

Successful attacks by the assault divisions has presented an opportunity to strategically breach the Alamein defensive line.

To exploit this opportunity Operation Battlecry is an all arms assault on enemy defences in the Alamein line to systematically crumble entrenched forces and break through their line to re-establish open manoeuvre.

Success in this Operation will also coincide with strategic operations in Morocco which will be vital to the overall North African situation.

Operational Objectives:

Phase one objectives will be to punch through the enemy defensive positions to allow infiltration by reserve units. This will be followed by the establishment of firebases within the enemy operational area to force engagement and write down enemy strength. Lastly breakthrough of the enemy second line positions will be achieved through the use of direct assault and flanking sub-operations.

Phase two objectives will be the pursuit and engagement of the retreating enemy forces as they retreat along the coast. In this phase highest priority will be given to independent operation and initiative.

Operational Timings:

D-Day for Operation Battlecry is 20th Feb with H-Hour provisionally set for 09:00 hours. Phase one objectives are expected to be achieved before sunset (6pm local time) on D-Day. Overnight resupply and re-organisation for pursuit will be arranged with Divisional logistics and support made available.

D+1 launch time for Phase two attacks is 10:00 hours.

Enemy Dispositions:

A mixed force of infantry and armour with artillery and mobile support is dug into the ASB positions. The first defensive line is one mile in depth and is backed by a second line two miles to the rear.

Intelligence will provide detailed information on enemy forces in your area of operation prior to each phase of the operation.

Terrain:

Mixed desert terrain, largely consisting of firm sand broken by hills, soft sand and wadis covers the entirety of the ASB positions. Some small oases and settlements will be indicated on the maps issued prior to each phase of the operation.

Be aware that the ASB position has been heavily contested previously and that you may expect to encounter detritus from these engagements during operation Battlecry.

Weather Report:

Weather for the 20th is expected to be clear, though high winds and light rain are possible later in the day. Weather for the 21st is expected to be clear.
