Monday 14th January:

The Warmachine and Hordes tournament has just altered a lot, check out the page with the info. They are doing more demo work on the Sunday if you want to come in, play a wee bit and learn how the game works.

Saturday 5th January:

We have had another local business join our sponsor list. They are PitYak Studios who are a sculpting, painting, conversions and custom job internet business based in Wellington. Check out their website.
I got to carry a huge heavy box home from the post office on Thursday from GHQ Models. And Friday morning I was woken very early by the courier dropping off the very shiny BattleCry Dice that Chessex has made for us. Very nice indeed…
We are now in the process of looking for volunteers to help with the front of house over the weekend, and help out in the shop. We are also looking for volunteers to help stuff loot bags during the week before BattleCry. If you are able to help with any of these, please email us as soon as possible.

Thursday 27th December:

Registrations are coming in and the tournaments are steadily filling. I’ve just received the lovely prizes donated by Mongoose Publishing which include nice shiny new hardcovered rule books for the Call to Arms Babylon5 miniatures tournament, and some shine new rpg books as well. I’ve just added the first of the roleplaying game blurbs. There are more to come so keep an eye on those pages. If you are wanting to take part in the Friday night Larp, please pre-register as soon as possible. We would like to tailor some characters to players so getting in quick is all good. Just over 6 weeks to go.

Sunday 9th December:

Our webmonkey has been slaving over various codings over the last month and this week his masterpiece was unveiled. On Thursday our pre-registration booking form went online. We have a web interface form and a downloadable form for printing or emailing.
As of today we have 10 pre-registrations for the 40K tournament.

Sunday 2nd December:

This BattleCry we are hoping to have more things for the public to try out, hopefully increasing our profile and increasing the people interested in taking part in future events. With this in mind we have been searching far and wide for New Zealand gaming companies and one that has just joined us is North Head Miniatures. They produce a growing range of naval miniatures. Watch their website for future developments. They will be attending BattleCry and running a demonstration table for some of their up and coming game systems.

Thursday 22nd November:

More developments. We have been talking to the Auckland Diplomacy Club about having some Diplomacy for the board games Sat evening event, and it has developed into a full offical DAANZ New Zealand Championship tournament. The championship will run over the 2 days of BattleCry, with 1 game round on Sat morning, 1 on Sat evening and the last one on Sunday morning. You can play in 1 round or all three rounds, and still be eligible for DAANZ ranking and prizes.

And if you have never played Diplomacy there will be people to help explain the game and during Sat afternoon there will be a demo table set up to help people learn the game.

I’ve also been talking to some of the guys from the Cambridge Wargaming Club. They are coming to BattleCry to run a 1/72 wargame called Operation WW2 (Operation Overlord) and people will be able to have a go on their demo tables. We are also talking to BattleFront about some possible demo tables of Flames of War. And we have some versatile board gamers who will be available for random games throughout the day and especially Sat night.

So if you aren’t planning to play in one of the big tournaments we have a growing number of demo games that you can come along to try out over the BattleCry weekend… and it’s free entry for spectators.

I have also added a new sponsor for our event. Chessex who make awesome dice are giving us some event support in the form of some special dice with the BattleCry logo on them. We will have some for sale and some will be used for prizes. Watch this space for more details.

Friday 16th November:

The 6mm Moderns tournament just gained GHQ Models as a sponsor, which is awesome. Their website is here.

Thursday 15th November:

Wohoo! Steve Jackson Games just joined our sponsors, and are supporting our Saturday night Munchkin tournament. There is talk of goodies for all the players and possibly a special Munchkin tshirt for the winner…. check out all the other cool stuff they produce on their website

Monday 12th November:
Rightio, just like to confirm that the Auckland Diplomacy Club has joined us for BattleCry. We are in the process of working out what sort of events we are going to run. Keep an eye on the tournament list for more details.

Vagabonds have joined our Sponsors, and they are supporting our growing Roleplaying tournament. Also Impact Miniatures have joined our sponsors. They are supporting our Beach Bloodbowl tournament, which is running on Saturday evening. Totally awesome!

Thursday 8th November:
Another company Privateer Press has offered to support the Warmachine and Hordes tournament for BattleCry. They are also looking at possible donation of some of their convention one-off rpg modules that they use to introduce their rpg Iron Kingdoms. I’ve also just found 2 possible gm’s to run them if they happen :)

Monday 5th November:
Woohoo, Mongoose Publishing have just offered to sponsor the Babylon 5 “A Call to Arms” event with some goodies to give out as prizes and also donate some prizes towards the roleplaying tournament as well… Woohoo!!!! I am so wrapped.
And Shannon, who is to be our awesome chef over the weekend, and I have been working on a bigger menu of drinks and nibbles that will be available over the weekend. Only 3 months away.

Friday 2nd November:
And now more have joined the list of sponsors. Gripping Beast, an online miniatures company. Essex Miniatures, another miniature company which have their website here. They are both supporting the 25mm DBMM tournament. Board Games NZ are supporting the new Victory at Sea tournament. They are here.

Thursday 1st November:
Woohoo, Caliver Books have just confirmed they will be supporting the 25mm DBMM Medieval/Ancient Doubles tournament with some goodies. You can check out their website here.

Friday 26 Oct:
Just confirmed an actual tournament of the 6mm Moderns that we trialled at the last BattleCry. Instead of doubles it will be just a singles one. If you are interested in more details about this, email Kieran from AWC or email Karen and she will forward your request.

On this note the Flames of War tournament is now cancelled. Sorry those of you who would participate, but now that we have 3 other events taking place. With no organiser, it seems the right thing to do for 2008. We will try again for 2009 if there is interest.

Thur 18 Oct:
New event added: Victory at Sea, wargaming tournament. For more information talk to Jochen or Monkey, or email Karen.

Flame of War tournament looks like it will be cancelled due to no volunteer for judge/organiser. If you can help, please let Karen know asap.

Sun 2 Sept:
Discussion with the Auckland BloodBowl Federation looks like we will be featuring a BloodBowl Event for BattleCry 2008. Probably just a 1 day event. More information as it comes.

And also a return of Magic the Gathering. The MTG event will be a 1 day tournament. The format will be 10 card proxy vintage. More information as it comes.

A possible new demonstration game that is being discussed at the moment is the Babylon 5 tabletop skirmish game. We are looking for willing victims to play. We have enough figures for up to 4 more people. Email Karen for more information.

Voting is in. Theme has been chosen. The theme for BattleCry 2008 is Showstopping Extravaganza. Think big theatrical show and musical like Cats or Chess. This theme is just an extra to flavour the logo design, posters and possibly the larp. There will be an extra prize for all roleplaying games that can work in shows or musicals into their game.

First sponsor for 2008 confirmed. RedBrick have confirmed they will be donating copies of EarthDawn and Fading Suns to the prize pool for the Roleplaying Tournament.

Wanted: Theme idea for BattleCry 2008.

The person who suggests the winning theme will win a BC 2008 Tshirt.

Suggestions for themes open today, and we will be accepting theme suggestions until the end of March. All suggestions will be posted on the club website, and at the end of March a voting poll will be set up to choose the winning theme.

The theme is what will flavour the logo design, the posters, the Larp (if possible), special games on offer during BC, tropheys awarded for 1st place etc for BattleCry 2008…

Please email your BattleCry 2008 theme suggestion to BattleCry and include your name and contact details.

You can also enter more than one suggestion…

There will also be entry forms for the competition at BattleCry 2007.

Karen

Suggestions so far:

Peter Cummusky: How about a tribute to the Horror genre of roleplaying? Horror games, horror LARP, horror goodies, etc? (Possibly some sort of soulless monster on the logo)

David Abramczyk: What about the theme was “War”? From, say, the 100-years War/Agincourt era, to WW2/Korea?

Richard Vowles: Why not pick a “place” rather than a particular genre, then you can all set different kinds of scenarios around that “place”, have a competition around it (scenario writing as well as running), and you can also base your LARP around it as well. So you’d have “summer camp”, or “alpine retreat” or some such. Each of which can handle lots of different genres and would really stretch the imagination of GMs (TT-RP & LA-RP).

A 19th century seaside resort on the coast of England (one of those wealthy person Spas) - then you could do detective, thriller, horror, aliens, espionage, sci-fi (think virtual world), etc.

Daphne: I suggest: Unlikely Superheroes. Like, er, Towel Girl, whose weapon of choice is a wet towel for flicking people with, or something.

If you’re looking for a time period the obvious one would, of course, be the Lovecraftian era - mid 20th C. Or possibly 18/19th C London, depending on which flavour of horror you’re wanting.

Vic: AMAZONS! :D

Jared: I’m sure I’m not the first to suggest it, but since this years was Pirates…

Battlecry 2008: Ninjas!

Other Jared ideas:
Gangsters, 1920s style (Gangsters LARP!)
The Matrix
(And for the really daring:) Battlecry: The Musical

Karen: Suggestion one: Egyptian theme. Egypt in the 1900’s. Larp wise I was thinking archeaologists from different countries, ruins, locals, tribes still following ancient customs, weird things that go bump inthe night, and of course mummys :) Logo could be an Anubis styled figure, but using a wolf head instead of a jackel :) (god Upuat, who is a wolf)

Suggestion two: murder mystery styled theme, with the larp set in a mansion, like Cluedo. With lots of guests, and suspects… Could be set in any time, and would be totally classy if we were able to find a big house we could run the game in, which has lots of stairs and rooms etc… Not sure about the logo, but maybe a mansion seen at night by the light of the moon, with a wolf-head on the moon… no, not werewolves/etc, but all humans…

James: 1920’s Arkham. Or an expedition to Antarctica…

Karen: How about a “hard, not nice fae/fantasy world, mixed with real world” sort of theme. Dark fantasy I guess you could call it. There is a book called The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint which has how kids see things… and as you get older that stops happening… and adults call it pretend. Those imaginary friends, the monsters in the closet or under the bed, those flashes you see out of the corner of your eye but when you look there isn’t anything, those sorts of things… there is a sort of horror-y thing. And some of them are not very nice at all…. here is where things like Brothers Grimm original fairy tales come in, and european myths and legends.

Have a hospital sort of house, on the edge of a forest, where the patients aren’t all quite there cause they still see/talkto things…. and the staff who are “grown up”… and the “others” who are posing as staff or patients or maybe the “things that go bump in the night” is diminisioning/dying because no-one believes in them anymore… so they are out to get some attention or revenge or……

Or slanted abit like in the book by Simon R. Green called Shadow’s Fall. The basic premise of the book is that Shadow’s Fall is a place where dreams go to die.

And by dreams I mean anything that has captured the imagination of man. Be it rock stars who lived too fast and died too young, cartoon characters from series’ that got canned, Sidekicks that were written out of the movie adaptation, the monster under the bed, the dog you had when you were 5 but got hit by a car. And in the midst of this a population of normal people trying desperately just to get on with their lives.

Dark, broody, horror, crazy people, fantastic costumes, special affects etc…

Cameron Burns: Murder Mystery theme, wolf could have a Sherlock Holmes hat on and magnifying glass, or a night time old mystery mansion picture with a wolf shape on the moon… and further discussion included a possible “opening night”, possibly at a new exhibit of the local museum… 1920’s ish…

Matthew: Something Scifi.
